about

I wanted to make a remix of a 1990 song called "Dansul" by Romanian singer Silvia Dumitrescu. The chorus lyrics are something along the lines of "Dancing, dancing, is normal at my age/ The rhythm, the rhytm gets me in it's spell"

I could not find a good source for the song and any attempts to extract a working accapella track failed so after many failed attempts I decided to keep the instrumental and add a twist.

That twist would be the bridge in the middle of the song, that imagines the public opinion and authorities in absolute shock about someone saying something as daring as "dancing is something normal at my age".

At this point I need to drop a bit of history for context: in december 1989 a country-wide revolution ended the almost 30 years of communism in Romania (and the aftermath is still felt today, 30 years after the revolution). The song "Dansul" was launched in summer of 1990 and it was quite modern for the Romanian music of that time and, for this reason, quite unlikely to evade the communist censorhip should they still be in charge. This is why the little news segment I wrote for the interlude although absurd, it was quite likely to happen under a communist regime.

I recorded the "breaking news" segment myself and here is the translated version:

"We interrupt your regular programme for a breaking news! A young Ms. left the Romanian public opinion in shock and awe, stating just a couple of moments ago, that “DANCING is something normal at my age”.
The local authorities announced the launch of a swift investigation, considering the unprecedented and potentially escalating nature of the matter. We shall keep you updated, as the situation unfolds, on the case that SHOCKED the entire Eastern Europe!"

So here it is, a tribute to a song that tried to add some normality to a country that was waking up from a 30 years long coma.
